Botox® Cosmetic Egg Harbor Township, NJ

Years of squinting, laughing, frowning, smoking and worrying can result in lines and wrinkles called “expression lines”.

Botox® Cosmetic, produced by Allergan, Inc., is a therapeutic muscle-relaxing agent that gently relaxes the muscles to prevent them from creasing and furrowing thus creating a smooth canvas for the skin. For over a decade, ophthalmologists have applied Botox® Cosmetic for the treatment of blepharospasm. Over the last several years, physicians have utilized Botox® Cosmetic as a treatment to correct the visible signs of stress and aging. Botox® Cosmetic may also be used for the treatment of hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating of the axillaries (underarms), palms of hands and soles of feet.

Botox® Cosmetic is injected into the specific muscles that are contracting and causing the lines and wrinkles. Areas that are commonly treated include the forehead, between the eyebrows, crows feet, upper lip lines, chin dimpling and downturned mouths. Treatment programs are designed to suit the patient’s goals and can be combined with fillers and laser for overall facial rejuvenation. It takes approximately 10 minutes and immediately following treatment, you may resume regular activities. The effects usually last 3 to 4 months and fades away gradually. Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) improvement may last 4-9 months.

1) What is Botox?

Botox is the ONLY approved treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of both moderate and severe frown lines. It has other relevant uses in medicine such as treating migraines, muscle spasms, bladder overactivity, and excessive sweating. It is extremely safe and effective. Botox contains tiny amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin refined from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum.

2) How does Botox work?

Botox targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines- the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years. Your doctor will inject these muscles with Botox to temporarily reduce muscle activity. This decrease in muscle activity will result in visible smoothing of your facial lines.

3) Will Botox make me “look like I have had work done”?

Botox is a technique sensitive treatment. You should discuss your desired goals with your physician. Most patients wish to achieve “natural” results, allowing them still to express facial emotion, while still softening their facial lines.

4) Can Botox be combined with “facial fillers”?

Absolutely! When combined with facial fillers, Botox can truly achieve a “Liquid face lift”, meaning the results can make a person appear as though they had a facelift, but with NO surgical intervention, minimal downtime (to allow for any bruising or swelling to subside), and extremely natural results. Many patients are opting for these non-surgical lifts due to safety concerns (anesthesia and surgical risks) , the need to return to work and social commitments almost immediately, and the desire to not look “pulled” or “artificial”.

5) Does Botox hurt and what are the possible side effects?

Botox injections are most commonly describe as little “pinches” . Most patients do not require any topical anesthesia, although it is offered to patients who are pain sensitive. Side effects of Botox are not common and are temporary if they occur: 3% eyelid drooping or heaviness of eyelids, 1% swelling. Even less likely: dry mouth, pain at injection site, allergic reaction. For more info on side effects or individual concerns, patients are encouraged to discuss these with their doctor during consultation.

6) When will I see results and how often should I get injections?

You may begin to see results within 24-48hrs for moderate to severe frown lines. Most results last up to 4 months. Ideally, patients receive injections 3 times a year. This allows the patient to achieve sustained reduction of their lines.
