Dermal Fillers Egg Harbor Township, NJ

Fill in Lines and Wrinkles without Downtime

A particular type of cosmetic skin injectable is the dermal filler, a quickly expanding class of products we use at Appearance Dermatology to treat well-worn wrinkles and larger skin folds. Opposed to the neuromuscular toxin class of injectables, like BOTOX® Cosmetic, the dermal filler actually creates volume within the skin.

To talk to one of our specialists about these transformative dermal fillers, contact our offices serving New Jersey from their locations in Egg Harbor Township, Vineland, and Marlton.

Dermal Filler Types

If you’re looking for great cosmetic results without the pain and hassle of plastic surgery, dermal fillers may do the trick. The types offered at our New Jersey offices each have their own benefits, so before your treatment Dr. Toome will help determine which type would best suit your needs and deliver the results you desire.

Below are some brief descriptions of our treatments, but we encourage you to visit each of these products individually for more information and before-and-after pictures.

Juvéderm® is made of hyaluronic acid and works with the body’s own hyaluronic acid to create volume. The results are immediate and most effective in the nasolabial folds (lines around the nose), lips and between the brows.

Radiesse® is made of calcium hydroxiapatite, a main component of teeth and bones. The thicker consistency of this product makes it ideal for nasolabial folds and hand rejuvenation. Its composition also allows it to last longer, thus requiring less frequent touch ups.

Sculptra® is composed of Poly-L-Lactic acid (a synthetic material). This wonderful volumizer is best suited to treat more dramatic atrophy, such as the hollows of the cheeks and temples. This tool enables us to replace the volume that our faces lose through normal aging or dramatic weight loss, which often results in laxity and crepiness.

Restylane® is cosmetic dermal filler that adds volume within the skin. Like Juvéderm®, it consists of hyaluronic acid. In the human body, natural hyaluronic acid provides volume and fullness to skin. The hydrophilic, or “water loving,” nature of the hyaluronic acid molecules allows them to bind many times their own weight in water as they slowly break down. This process helps maintain volume for about six months.

Dermal Filler Lifespans

One of the best parts about dermal fillers is their fairly immediate results and minimally invasive nature. Still, results from these treatments don’t last forever. Here are the general lifespans of each of the aforementioned dermal fillers:

– Juvéderm®

o 6 to 12 months in the nasolabial folds

o 3 to 6 months in the lips

– Radiesse®

o 6 to 12 months

– Sculptra®

o 2 to 4 years (although it requires multiple treatments)

– Restylane®

o 6 to 12 months in the nasolabial folds

o 3 to 6 months in the lips

1) How do I know which facial “filler” is right for me?

During your consultation, your doctor will discuss your goals with you and then choose the appropriate filler or combination of fillers that will allow you to achieve your desired results. A brief guide is provided below:

Juvederm XC: used for more superficial lines around the mouth, nasolabial lines, and lip augmentation
Juvederm/Voluma: used to beautifully restore volume to the cheek and mid face area in a very natural manner; thereby even helping to reduce nasolabial lines.
Radiesse: treats deep nasolabial folds, deep chin folds, acne scars or other facial depressions. Radiesse actually stimulates new tissue development for extended correction because of it natural collagen generating properties.

2) What should I do prior to treatment?

One week before injection, avoid taking ST. John’s Wort, Vitamin E, Aspirin, Motrin, Nuprin, Fish Oil, or any other agents that increases bruising.

3) Are the injections painful?

Some patients are completely fine with no anesthesia, since these products are all mixed with lidocaine. Other patients desire to have a topical numbing cream applied for 10-20 minutes prior to procedure.

4) Approximately how long will the injections last?

Juvederm XC: about 6 months
Juvederm Voluma: : 12-18 months
Radiesse: : about 6 months or longer

How long each product lasts depends largely on each individual’s metabolism. The above represent average duration.

5) What are the side effects?

The most common side effects of any filler are bruising and swelling, which usually last a few days to a week. Post injection, ice should be applied to minimize these side effects. Blindness has been reported as a rare side effect when filler migrated via injection into a vessel which supplies the eye. This can be reversed with immediate intervention. Patients are encouraged to discuss all potential side effects with their doctor.

6) How soon after injection will I see results?

The result is immediate. In fact most patients can reapply makeup after brief icing and resume their daily activities.
